Judgment & Execution - Defendant

This guidance note is designed to give you basic information in respect of the Judgment & Execution that has been served upon you by the Coroner. Whilst this guide is designed to assist you, it is not a substitute for legal advice, if you remain unsure about the Judgment & Execution you are strongly advised to seek legal advice.

1) The Judgment & Execution

You will have received a copy of the Judgment & Execution and a breakdown of the costs from the Coroner; this will clearly show the following information:

a) The Plaintiffs name

b) The amount of the claim

c) The costs for the action

d) The Coroner’s poundage

e) If there is interest to be charged

The breakdown will also show the figures required should the debt be paid in instalments.

2) What to do next

It is important to contact the Coroner’s office as soon as you receive the Judgment & Execution to discuss paying the debt. If the you feel that you cannot pay the full amount in a single payment please discuss this with the Coroner as in most cases an agreed instalment plan is possible.

The important thing to remember is the Coroners office will help you as much as possible; therefore whilst the debt exists make sure you keep in regular contact.
